If you are a chromaphiliac - someone who loves color - then this class is for you. Equal parts art history, theory, and hands-on workshop, this class will give you the opportunity to dive deep into the brilliant world of color. Learn all about the fascinating history of pigments - from the accidental creation of mauve by a scientist trying to create a cure for malaria, to present day innovations such as YInMn Blue and Vantablack. Gain an understanding of the science of color, the different qualities and categories of pigments, and how this knowledge can benefit you in the studio. Explore the history of color wheels, and the ways in which scientists, philosophers and artists have theorized and systematized color throughout history. Explore the way color has been denounced throughout periods of Western culture, the age-old struggle between form and color, and the way in which technological advancements in the production of pigments and paints birthed new art movements and ways of working. Finally, discover the palettes and color theories of of important artists, including Vincent van Gogh, the Impressionists, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, and more. Each week, explore a new aspect of color and its rich history, and create work inspired by these theories, palettes, and artists. Whether learning about pigments made from mummies and snails, or discovering which group of painters were accused of “ violettamania,” this class will be sure to make you fall more in love with color than ever before.

Cost: $475 (+tax). Canvases required. All other materials (GOLDEN Heavy Body, Fluid and High Flow paints and mediums, mixed media supplies, etc) included.
